K1200S Fuel Gauge ???

Postby gjt2261 on Sun Jan 17, 2010 6:58 pm

Ok - I had the battery out of my 08 K1200S for maintenance, reinstalled it, and now the fuel gauge is on empty, with accompanying flashing yellow warning light and "FUEL" blinking on my cluster. I have had the sensor in the tank replaced twice under warranty, the last time about 3 months ago, but the symptoms then were simply an inaccurate fuel gauge - reading full or almost full regardless of the fuel level. Is there a process to recalibrate the gauge/sensor, or am I stuck returning to the dealer again???? :? Oh, forgot to mention - the amount of fuel in the tank is having no effect on the current concern. Full, almost empty, all the same. Thanks in advance, Greg.

Hmmm, that sounds like something needs to be reset. I just had the tank off of mine, and noticed that fuel level strip was only attached on one side, and dangling. I presume that is why I'm constantly reading an extra 75 miles in the tank. I reattached it correctly. We'll see if it helps after a few tanks.

Hi Porks, welcome to the forum :)

Just be sure the indicator isn't disconnected (cable, connectors), if all is OK is possible that the resistance was cutted, the you must change the whole sensor.

I just dropped my 08 k12s off at bmw atlanta. They are replacing the fuel strip for the second time. Both tims the guage shows 2/3rds of a tank when it is empty. Ive been told there is not a fix or calibratin, just replacement and hope it goes out again within 2 years so i dont have to pay!!!! Ive been told MW knos this is a faulty design but has not came up with a permanant fix. Ive also heard that ethanol may be a cause.Does anyone have any more info on a good fix or do we all just use our tripometer like the old, old days!!!!!

You hear of this fuel tank measurement problem from time to time on this site...but it doesn't appear to be a very frequent issue.

Well just to add one more, my fuel gauge on my 2005 k1200s is now permanently stuck on empty.

At first, it would show empty every time I'd fill up the tank, then rise up after a few miles of riding. Maybe vibration from ride un-sticking it? I don't know.

Now it's just stuck on empty, and I refill at sometime after 150 miles on trip OD. Very annoying.

I'm usually pretty good at fixing things like this "redneck" style, so I'm going to try to put together a solution and repair for this. If I can figure it out, I'll post a thread with pictures and data. I figure I owe that much to 'yall for all the help I've taken from this site.

+1 on the fuel gauge showing nothing, no matter what the actual contents of the tank are. Just out of warranty too...blech.
