Fuel Sending Unit died on 2008 K1200S

Postby Yellowjacket on Thu May 13, 2010 1:48 pm

Just after I filled up, the gauge read full and quickly down to half then zero and so did the range. I spoke some local techs and apparently this has been happening to the 2005 and up and coincided with the advent of a strip type sensor (no more floaters) and the alcohol/gas mix at the pump. My warranty lasts till may 2011 however replacing it now may mean that it will likely fail in ~2 years time. Each replacement part carries another 2 years warranty. I am contemplating 2 choices: (1) Keep using the trip meter ii as gas gauge and replacing the sending unit around April 2011 then get 2 more years of warranty or (2) replace it now and get the 2 year warranty coverage. Any feedback from the pros? Thanks.

Replace it now. I am on my 4th strip, K12S '08. My wife's '08 strip failed at 10 miles from new. So much for the BS about the gas/alcohol excuse. My present one is lasting pretty well now for about 8 months.

Fourth strip!

I have not heard of this problem, nor experienced it (yet!).

What brand of fuel are you guys using?

Btw, what does the "S/T" stand for?

I use all brands of gas. Usually all 10% ethanol. But, as I said, my wife's fuel strip broke at 10 miles from new.

BTW I am tending towards replacing the strip sooner than later. I do use high octane gas. Using the tach is ok but the fuel warning light is annoying.

The S/T (Sports / Touring) is my designation since the previous owner added the following for touring: Wunderlich triple tree top clamp, Rizoma Bar, Spazzo levers, Evoluzione slave clutch cylinder, tall K1200RS windscreen bolted on a MRA VARIO Touring Screen, Givi saddlebags. It works great for me since I wanted a lower GT -- lite. :D
